[Biz Class Deal Alert] Qatar Qsuites for as low as 54k points each way

American Express has a 30% transfer bonus to airlines that use Avios including British Airways, Aer Lingus, and Iberia through Sept. 27. That makes booking the world’s best business class bookable for as low as 54k Amex points (vs. 70k usually).

Luckily, those Avios to can be moved freely to Qatar Airways if your account is at least 30 days old. Or you can use Avios in your British Airways to book your Qatar award flight.

Importantly, you should pretty much NEVER book a partner flight with Iberia, as partner awards through Iberia are NONREFUNDABLE. Those same flights can pretty much always be booked on another Avios airline (Aer Lingus, British Airways, Qatar, Finnair) for the same rate or even a better rate.

Also, despite Qatar’s new restrictions (my blog with details), you can also still book for 2 if you use British Airways (on most routes).

Qatar Airways: 70-94.5k points + ~$200-230 in tax/fees one-way. $25 change/cancel fee if done 24+ hours before departure. $100 fee if 3-24 hours before departure. Tax/fees goes up if you connect through Doha.

Qatar won’t let you view tax/fees unless you have enough points to book. You can call or chat to ask, but generally it is around $200-230 between US-DOH; $287-788 between US-MLE (MLE charges a large departure tax on premium cabins); and $300-$400 to/from other Asian destinations as an example.

Peak vs. Off-Peak: Qatar is now implementing a peak vs. off-peak pricing model where off-peak pricing costs 70k between US-DOH and 94.5k during peak dates (35% more!)

Don’t forget seat selection isn’t free unless you have Oneworld Sapphire or Emerald status or book a flexi award (2x saver cost) ☹

Qatar has an extensive network beyond Doha. You can book on one ticket with a layover in Doha between the US and the Maldives, Seychelles, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Delhi, Mumbai, Cape Town, Bangkok, Hanoi, Hong Kong, Bali, and many more destinations.

You can also fly to the Maldives from the US for as low as 85k points per person one-way, including the DOH-MLE leg in first class instead of business in some cases

1) Need to log into your British Airways account to search.

2) On home page, hover over “Book” then choose the “Book a flight with Avios” option on the bottom left of the dropdown.

3) Put in dates and destination, choose “One way only”, and business/club as the cabin class. Then hit search.

4) Confirm award availability. BA will show you how many seats you can book and the price.

1) On Qatar’s site, you will need to log in to your account to search. I prefer booking with Qatar as they have a cheaper change/cancel fee than British Airways, and if there is a schedule change or flight cancellation, it is easier to rebook with Qatar. However, if you want to book for 2 and haven’t unlocked the ability to add people to a Qatar list (my blog with details), you should use British Airways or JAL to book.

2) On the Qatar site, log in and put in dates and destinations, choose one way, choose Premium as class type, and check “Book using Avios”. Then search.

Semi-useful hint: There is a calendar view option. When picking the date, choose the “My dates are flexible” option to pull up calendar view. However, it’s “semi-useful” as the calendar will say “available” even if the award is a “flexi” award, which costs 2x the saver price. So a ticket can cost 140k points per person… Also sometimes the calendar view doesn’t work.

3) Confirm availability and ensure there are enough seats for the dates you want to book. You can do this by searching again with the number of passengers you plan to travel with. The cost Qatar shows if you have multiple passengers is the total cost for all passengers.

4) Transfer the points you need and book!

Nearly all flights between the US-DOH should have a plane equipped with Qsuites business class. Every flight between the US-DOH is marketed as such when you book. However, due to operational needs, Qatar Airways could always change the plane last minute and thus the cabin type could be different.

If you are flying between the US-DOH, I would say you have a 99% chance of getting a plane with Qsuites, and that chance drops sharply if you are traveling to certain countries… But the in-flight service and food are still world-class no matter what type of plane you get!
